I don’t have much to say about this shake except that I love it!! The recipe is from Oatmeal Stories. This is the first recipe I’ve made of hers, but it won’t be the last! Also, as a bonus, her photography is amazing! The taste of this smoothie/shake is incredible. Due to the dates and banana, it does have a high amount of sugar but it’s all natural sugar, so you know best if this is more a dessert option for you or breakfast.
It has Maca powder in it, which I LOVE. Maca is a Peruvian root. Some claim it helps with energy and anxiety. But there isn’t research to my knowledge regarding it’s safety while nursing or during pregnancy. There’s also conflicting research if it’s safe for those with thyroid issues. I have thyroid issues and am nursing and feel comfortable with it in moderation and personally feel it gives me a boost of energy, but if you fall into one of the previous categories, carefully evaluate and research what you feel comfortable with for your body. I’ve tried the shake without Maca and it’s just as good.
Notes:
- I subbed almond butter for peanut butter just because food sensitivity
- I did vanilla extract instead of “essence”
- I soaked the dates with the oats (sometimes if I don’t have the time to soAk the oats, I skip it and it’s just as good)
Original recipe here. Her recipe with my notes is below:
Ingredients: (makes one big or 2 smaller servings)
- 1/2 cup oats soaked in 1/2 cup warm water for at least 30 minutes (the water gets absorbed and it cools down, but thanks to using warm water your oats will have more creamy texture)
- 1 frozen banana
- 2 medjool dates
- 3/4 cup almond milk
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- pinch of Himalayan salt
- 1 tsp maca powder (optional)
Method:
Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until very smooth and creamy. Transfer to the jars or glasses and (optionally) top with coconut yogurt or whipped coconut cream, dark chocolate chunks and nuts. You can also decorate it with a drizzle of date or coconut syrup
We love this recipe and hope you do too!
