This is my FAVORITE hot chocolate recipe. It’s courtesy of Sweet Laurel. I have not made the marshmallows in the recipe, but I am sure they are delicious! I love this topper with the marshmallows from her recipe book! I have made this recipe almost nightly during the winter!
My husband is not a fan because he feels it’s too thick and bitter, so this recipe may not appeal to all those in that category, but in my opinion thick and bitter (like dark chocolate) is how I like it!
This recipe uses cacao. You could of course use cocoa in a pinch, but this article explains the difference and why it’s so good for you!
Recipe Notes:
- I third everything in the recipe to make 1 cup (so 3/4 to 1 cup milk, 1 tablespoon cacao, etc.)
- Adjustments below are to 1 c serving size
- You can also add in fun things to make it different flavors. I love to add roughly 1/16 t. peppermint extract (start with just a drop and adjust to taste) to make peppermint hot cocoa
- I love these topped with the marshmallow recipe from her cookbook!
- Sometimes I add 1/2 teaspoon Maca.
- I use nut milk instead of coconut milk
